Breaking News: Earth-like planet could have liquid water!

For the first time in history, an Earth-like planet has been discovered orbiting a distant star.

At only one and a half times the radius of Earth, Gliese 581 C is the third and smallest planet to be discovered orbiting a Red Dwarf star located 20.5 light years away in the constellation Libra and the first one to approach the Earth's size.

The planet resides in the stars Goldilocks Zone where liquid water and life could occur. The team of Swiss, French and Portuguese astronomers used the European Southern Observatorys 3.6 m telescope to make this incredible discovery. See the video for more!

Saturn through a telescope

Every wonder what Saturn looks like through a large amateur telescope? Well here it is, taken with a TouCam webcam, 3x barlow through a Celestron C9.25.
The shimmering in the image is due to atmospheric turbulence. To keep the planet centered at very high magnification, an equatorial mount was used with accurate polar alignment.

Visual excerpt from the PBS HDTV Runaway Universe courtesy WGBH NOVA and Tom Lucas Productions. The Adaptive Mesh Refinement simulation grid automatically refines into subgrids to develop small-scale features generating over half a terabyte of data. We see gravitation forming nested hierarchies which vary many orders of magnitude. Tiny fluctuations in the density of the early universe are amplified into a network of interconnected filaments. Condensing gas clouds give birth to new stars and merge into whirling galaxies which congregate collide and interact in a fiery cosmic dance.
